A magnitude 4.9 earthquake hits southwestern China on Friday, striking Gao County in Yibin City within Sichuan province. According to official measurements published by the China Earthquake Networks Center, the seismic event occurred at 1:08 p.m. local time at a shallow focal depth of six kilometers. State broadcaster CCTV confirmed that one person was killed after being struck by a collapsing exterior wall while attempting to seek safety during the tremors. In addition to the single confirmed fatality, local government authorities reported that six individuals sustained minor injuries across affected residential areas. Emergency assessments conducted by the Yibin earthquake relief headquarters indicated that while no whole buildings collapsed, approximately 100 households sustained structural damage to wall exteriors and roofing materials. Seismologists note that shallow earthquakes occurring at depths under ten kilometers routinely transfer higher surface energy directly to immediate structures, increasing localized risks from falling debris. Following the event, provincial authorities initiated standardized emergency response procedures across Yibin City and adjacent administrative jurisdictions. The regional government deployed 17 specialized rescue teams comprising 183 emergency personnel, 44 transport vehicles, and 552 equipment units to conduct door-to-door safety checks. Rescuers prioritized structural inspections, hazard mitigation along transportation corridors, and medical assistance for injured residents across rural townships near the epicenter.
